On October 1, 2007 Federal support to state and county child support programs was dramatically reduced. These cuts will affect millions of single parent households and could push countless families into poverty and onto the rolls of Medicaid, Food Stamps and other public assistance programs. In many states, these cuts will force counties to lay off as many as a third of local child support workers who work directly with families to collect support and provide services.
The child support enforcement program ensures that our nation’s children in single-parent households receive a reliable source of financial and medical support. The program increases family self-sufficiency, reduces child poverty, and encourages both mother and father to be involved and committed to their children. More than 17 million children – a fourth of the nation’s children -- participate in the child support program. Nearly half of all poor, single mothers receive child support.
Congress is considering bipartisan legislation to restore these cuts and enable child support agencies to continue helping single parent families at current levels. If the funding is not restored, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that $11 billion in support owed to children will go uncollected over the next ten years. Show your support of our nation’s child support system and our country’s children by writing to your Members of Congress today!
The Child Support Enforcement Protection Act (HR 1386 in the House and S. 803 in the Senate) would reverse these reductions and enable Child Support Agencies to continue helping single parent families at pre-October 1 levels.
